Waikiki real estate

At one time, Waikiki was primarily swamps and farmland. Farmers produced taro, rice and other crops with the fresh water flowing from the mountains.

In the late 1920's, the government completed dredging of the Ala Wai canal to dry out swamps and reduce mosquitoes.  Waikiki gradually transformed from agriculture to a vacation destination.

Reminders of the good old days still exist.  The War Memorial Natatorium is a salute to the Hawaii residents that served in World War I.  Kapiolani Park, located at the base of Diamond Head, was dedicated by King Kalakaua in 1877 for his Queen Kapiolani.  Moana Hotel opened in 1901 and was the first hotel in Waikiki.  Kuhio Beach features a statue of Duke Kahanamoku, Hawaii's most famous Olympian.

Many choose to live in Waikiki because of its proximity to the beach, entertainment and restaurants.  Most residential properties in the area are condos.

Map of Waikiki and driving directions

From Honolulu Airport, take the H-1 freeway eastbound.  Here are two ways to get to Waikiki:

  • To reach the west side of Waikiki (closer to Ala Moana), take the Punahou offramp (exit 23), turn right on Punahou, right on Beretania and then left on Kalakaua Avenue.  Kalakaua Avenue will lead you directly to Waikiki.

  • The faster way to the east side of Waikiki (near Diamond Head), is to take exit 25A at King Street, past Market City Shopping Center, then turn right on Kapahulu Avenue.  Drive down Kapahulu and make a right turn either at Ala Wai Blvd or Kuhio Avenue.

From Hawaii Kai on the H-1 freeway, take the Kapiolani Boulevard offramp (exit 25B).  Follow Kapiolani Boulevard and make a left turn at the McCully Street intersection.  McCully goes over the Ala Wai bridge, then merges onto Kalakaua Avenue and leads you into Waikiki.

Important information about Hawaii vacation rentals

Vacation rentals are a hot topic and a lot of investors want to buy them.  Waikiki has more LEGAL vacation rentals than anywhere else on Oahu.  Kailua and Makaha are popular places, however most of the properties for sale in those neighborhoods would not be legal to operate as vacation rentals.

If you're interested in buying a legal vacation rental, Waikiki is the best place to look in Hawaii.

Island Colony is a great vacation rental property.  The Ilikai Apartment Building is another condo where vacation rentals are permitted.
