Kaimuki homes for sale

In the late 1800's, Kaimuki consisted mostly of red dirt and brush.  It was not a popular neighborhood.  As the island's population grew, so did Kaimuki.  In 1884, Daniel Paul Isenberg bought the area from William Lunalilo.  From there the land was sold off in smaller parcels and developed.  Waialae Avenue was the main street in Kaimuki.

In the 1960's, the H-1 freeway was built and Kaimuki's businesses suffered dramatically.  Motorists that used to stop and do business along Waialae Avenue now bypassed the area and went directly to Hawaii Kai, Kuliouou and other east Oahu neighborhoods.  In the 1990's the city made improvements to Waialae Avenue's streets and sidewalks.  New stores and restaurants appeared and customers are back for shopping and dining.

Now Kaimuki is a favorite neighborhood, bordered by Kahala to the east and Honolulu to the west.  Landscaped lawns and parks have replaced the red dirt and brush.  Homes on the hillsides have pleasant views of the city, ocean and mountains.

When you're in the area, make sure and take a look at the restaurants and coffee shops near the intersection of Waialae Avenue and Koko Head Avenue.  Other interesting things are the "mom and pop" shops selling crack seed, furniture and swimwear.  Harry's Music Store has been a fixture on Waialae Avenue since 1946.  In contrast Momentum Multisport, a triathlon shop near Waialae and 10th Avenue, recenty opened in August 2007.

Info about Kaimuki

Driving eastbound on the H-1 freeway, note that you're going up a hill towards Koko Head Avenue.  At the top of the hill on the right is the Kaimuki Fire Station.  This hill is a cinder cone, named Pu'u O Kaimuki.  Inside the cinder cone is a small neighborhood of homes and a circular structure made from lava, which purportedly is the site of an ancient he'iau (Hawaiian temple).

Another way to spell Kaimuki

Hawaiian language speakers spell the name as Ka'imuki.  That's Ka-imu-ki.  Few people spell and pronounce the name as it was originally conceived.  Instead, most of us pronounce it Kai-mu-ki.

Kaimuki library is located on Kokohead Avenue in Honolulu

One of the nicer condos in Kaimuki is Regency Park.

Saint Louis Heights is on the hillside above Kaimuki.  Wai'alae Avenue borders Kaimuki and Palolo Valley.  Housing throughout this area is popular for residents preferring to live in town.
