Hilo
Located on the east side of the Big Island, Hilo has a population of approx-imately 40,000 people. Hilo is the commercial center of the island.
Being on the windward side, Hilo tends to get more rain and has more greenery and forests. Weather is often sunny in the morning and cooler with some light rains in the afternoon.

Public schools serving Hilo include:

Although much of the Big Island's coastline is rocky, Hilo has some nice beaches, particularly in Keaukaha. Onekahakaha Park has white sand and a breakwater, a good place for the family to play at the beach.
Honoli'i is one of the popular areas to surf in Hilo. Hakalau, further north, is also a good place for surfing.
Interesting landmarks include the Palace Theatre on Hai'li Street, built in 1925. In the old days (early 1980's) we used to call it the "Termite Palace." Now the theatre has been restored and is showing its beauty again.
Akaka Falls State Park features a beautiful waterfall with a 442 foot drop. The path to the falls is a short and pleasant hike.
